All the years I’ve read theology and aesthetics and philosophy, about how the world works, and what is real, and how we know things. These provided hints, but never satisfied the heart. What I really needed to learn to do all that time, is to just shut up! Knowledge of reality is never going to connect us to reality. It is through humble practice and intention that we can begin to commune. I am finding that the best teacher is silence. There are many ways to engage with silence – meditation, walking, centering prayer, looking at the water, making art, etc etc. The point is to allow oneself to be still. I’ve probably read things like this quote from James Danahar before, but only recently do I actually get it. I can’t read about silence – I have to go do something that invites Silence to do its work on me. How do you do silence?
