Misaligned – when things don’t fit

I’ve got this painting currently hanging in my studio. I made it in 2012 in a season when I was very much not painting. I had just completed an MFA full of conceptual, performative, and site-specific work. I underwent this study for a lot of reasons – but mainly, I was seeking alignment. Art has always been for me a device for truth-telling, or truth-seeking, at least when I’d done it well enough. When I went into my MFA study, I had felt my work had veered way off track from this truth-seeking. That is, the work I was making was not telling the truth within me. I was seeking…

    Unraveled by fire

A painting I’ve been sitting with this week, slowly adding lines here and there, initially “inspired” by walking the puppy for however many days in a row we’ve been in-place (is it 50?) around the same streets in my neighborhood and trying to find some new ways, new turns, to create unexpected experience, while being hemmed in by circumstance. Over the week, as I’ve painted and repainted lines, this has become also a meditation on the energies coursing through all of us in any given day. That sounds trite as I write it. within one’s own I

within one’s own I, oil on canvas, 18″ x 25″ “…where did He abide, where did His eternal heart beat, where else but within one’s own I, deep inside, in what is indestructible, borne within every individual? But where, was this innermost and ultimate I? The great sages taught that it was not flesh and bone, it was neither thought nor consciousness. Where, were then was it to be found? …Alas, no one showed the way, no one knew it, not one’s father, not the teachers or the sages, not the holy sacrificial hymns! The Brahmins and their sacred books knew everything, everything! They had seen to everything and more:…

Breath – a visio divina meditation

In-breath / Out-breath, oil on canvas, 22″ x 30″ I’ve picked up painting over the holidays, working in the studio on a few new pieces over the past week. I’ve been wanting to paint again for awhile, being inspired by two different trips to New Mexico over the past couple of months. Having finished the work for my current exhibit, ‘That Which Is’ at Whitworth University, I’ve been freed up to play a bit with some ideas that have been floating around in my heart. I was in northern New Mexico for a retreat of Interspiritual Meditation facilitators in August. While there, I set up some art supplies and made…

    Photos and Notes from Iona

A few photos, with items I’ve written in my journal over the past few days in Iona, Scotland. “Does the road wind uphill all the way? Yes, to the very end. Will the journey take the whole long day? From morn to night my friend.” -Christina Rossetti “Welcome, O Life! I go to encounter for the millionth time the reality of experience and to forge in the smithy of my soul the uncreated conscience of my race.” James Joyce “Approach the secret places of (your) soul, and there be attentive to the ‘inner teaching’ that God has placed within (you) regarding your essential goodness, and what (you) should do.” John…
